Ahhh...

Sometime last year, I lamented the lack of dim sum providers, (in my area or neighboring cities, or heck, anywhere I knew of), that were friendly to my sort.

I found the most amazing, no, LEGENDARY 100% vegetarian dim sum in Chinatown in Honolulu just last week. And took my very finicky mother and she loved it. The awesome owner, who also served us, kept the restaurant open just for us. Who knew? Spirit of aloha indeed!

Incidentally, the restaurant owner's mother is a Buddhist and has been a strict vegetarian for over sixty years, which is why they, (her children that own the place), have that 100% veg place. Right across the hall in the Chinese Cultural Center from their veg place is their other "Legend Seafood Restaurant" which serves fish and lots of meat dim sum. The owner was telling my mother and I that unlike their mother, her brother and sister who co-own the two restaurants, love to eat meat, "everyday!" =)

Muchogecko, Hawaii was amazing. It was heaven on earth, you would have loved it.

Which reminds me that I should find time to hang out at the local Buddhist temple. They're so awesome.
Hawaii needs me. I haven't been there in almost 2 decades.

are pretty rocking and do offer pretty good veg. options. There's an excellent take out place that PETA staff members swear by, BUT, still, no_dim_sum for me =( We have a couple of places that offers traditional dim sum but it's all meat and seafood based. And it was dim sum that I craved.
Reading about people having dim sum for lunch, watching people eat dim sum on the celluloid, and hearing about it, just seemed so fantastic that I fantasized about it a lot. It's hard being a veg head foodie. So... I had always wanted to try, but never had the opportunity. Until now! It was traditional, home made, fresh, and DELICIOUS. Totally delicious. Seriously, off the charts.
Oh! And on the topic of hard to find vegetarian dishes that are excellent substitutions for traditional meat based items- I had "vegetarian" paella a few months ago at this new Spanish place in town and it was fabulous. Traditional paella cooked by a Spanish chef was another dish I'd always wanted to try as well, and now I have! Yays. I think I'm good for now. I don't know if there's anything else out there that I need to try. Yep. I'm good. I should probably go run a marathon. I gained about a million pounds in HI.

Even here in Texas we have lots of "ethnic" vegetarian restaurants. In the new Chinatown area there are too many to count, the best (or at least one of the best) Indian restaurants around here is purely vegetarian, and there are other vegetarian options too. Unfortunately, if you want American food, you're kind of screwed because other than salads and side dishes, most of the vegetarian stuff sucks.

So my question, I guess, is if you don't live in a small town in the middle of nowhere, are there no decent asian vegetarian options?

vegetarian options here. Including my own kitchen. But, that's not what I was missing here in my area. There aren't any VEGETARIAN DIM SUM options here- which is what I wrote about. Dim Sum. Dim Sum that is 100% vegetarian is nowhere to found =(
I cannot walk in and "order to my heart's content" without feeling anxious that I may be getting meat alongside with the veg dishes at the local Korean "dim sum" place, so I don't even bother. It just feels good to go to a completely vegetarian dim sum place and know that even the sauces aren't made with "it's just a little fish, just a little piece of pork, etc..."
It's a good feeling. I wouldn't have written a diary about a place I could easily find locally. That would be boring, at least for me. Heck, this is probably boring, regardless! There is a comment written by someone that resonates with how I feel about not having to wonder what is included in the steaming dumplings brought to your table in the sumptuous looking dim sum carts here.
