I have this problem going on where I come to work all refreshed and energetic, then I speak to The Boss and just want to shut down for the day.

Today it happened before I even spoke with him. It was still because of him, but it came through a third party.

Our phone consultant is back in town today. We're set to start turning up our sites on the new data network. The Boss scheduled me for a long day, and sent out an email to directors at four sites telling them to expect disruptions. Right away there was a problem.

One of the sites on his list (the first one, actually) is our newest office and already has a voip system in place. Because The Boss arranged for its installation, I have no access to the router or switch and no knowledge of the network setup. Their phone numbers have not been switched to our new carrier. Dropping in the new switch, let alone routing them over a new connection, would likely kill their voip traffic. I have no idea what he's thinking here. We even discussed this on Friday, about half an hour before he sent the email.

Missing from the list is the only site our consultant new was getting turned up today. So, um, he has no idea what's going on. It seems he was sent an email with a whole different timetable. The poor bastard didn't get into Buffalo until after 3AM, has had no sleep, and now has to deal with this garbage.

Included on the list is a site run by an OCD PITA VP, who is to be avoided whenever possible. This morning The Boss wanders in with a fantastic idea! The VP is going on vacation starting Wednesday, so let's keep everything a secret and do it then. I remind The Boss about the email he sent Friday. His response? "Oh, did I send that out?"

Added to all that, he constantly forgets about the need to update routing tables, so as he's assigning people here and there he forgets I need to be able to telnet into my routers. So right now I'm assigned to be at sites with no route to the main office. I take it as a compliment that he still believes all of this stuff happens automagically.

This is my day. Someone get me a pillow.

Addendum - Just got out of a meeting with our new provider. Apparently both of the schedule sent by The Boss, one to me and one to the consultant, were wrong.

Cut The Boss out of the loop?

Can't cut The Boss out of the loop by Phil the Canuck (2.00 / 0) #2 Tue Jul 22, 2008 at 06:59:58 AM EST
He'd just re-insert himself.
