ah this is not good by dev trash (2.00 / 0) #3 Thu Jul 17, 2008 at 08:59:26 PM EST
I switched the dns back over to zoneedit because I was mucking soemthing up at pairnic involving CNAMES.  So now DNS is where it shoul dbe but the website is unreachable.

A 404 =! DNS problem, you're showing a 404 and your headers are serving a 200.

your server is configed in that it's not allowing directories to be shown (the 404) - which is fine and dandy.

Try your URL sans the trailing slash. Your index page shows up just fine.

if you go to http://64.62.190.56/  all is okay.  and clover kicker's post above says I reset the DNS back to zoneedit, like before I started this Google App experiment.

You say if you go to http://www.stevenpatz.net you get a actual website with content?

it's a dns caching issue on my ISP end.  I just went to the site via my SDF account and it is up and running.  My ISP has some seriously lagged DNS caches.

in about 24 hours these days for major ISPs... when were you messing with the DNS?

So it's updated for husi ppl, and my SDF account but not for me.  I hope when I fiddle with the Google Apps mail stuff it's not so bad.

Really? by ucblockhead (4.00 / 1) #17 Fri Jul 18, 2008 at 10:53:51 AM EST
I get a page that says something about "asian hotties to you're door!!!" Fortunately all the images have URLS that start "C:\Documents and Settings", as I'm here at work.

yes I am getting actual content by yankeehack (2.00 / 0) #8 Thu Jul 17, 2008 at 09:44:47 PM EST
you aren't serving a page with the trailing slash though - that is a server setting.

Not that the trailing slash is a DNS issue.

Probably a vhost problem by fluffy (2.00 / 0) #12 Thu Jul 17, 2008 at 10:59:16 PM EST
Can you do it as an A instead of a CNAME?  CNAME records are a bit hacky and often webservers decide that since the address doesn't canonically resolve to them that they need to go to a different vhost.

I am not sure by dev trash (2.00 / 0) #15 Thu Jul 17, 2008 at 11:50:08 PM EST
I don't think I am going to do any of the CNAME stuff on GOOG APPs tough.  maybe the MX stuff though.  At least try them out for handling my email, for the domain.  Not that I get spammed all that much but well I'm curious.

I um by dark nowhere (2.00 / 0) #16 Fri Jul 18, 2008 at 01:41:55 AM EST
had posted something that autoformatting had messed up.

Anyway, the problem with your link has nothing to do with DNS or trailing slashes. There's a space in there, which is why there's a 404.

DNS takes $TTL seconds to update. Whatever that's set to will tell you how long you need to wait between updates before checking to see if it worked. Changing the value will not have any effect until after the next update.

If you've access to linux or something, then you can try using the dig command to diagnose the state of it before its updated, but since you probably don't I can't be arsed to go into the details. If you do, let me know and I'll tell you what you can do if you're interested. (You can do it with windows too, but I really can't be arsed to get into that.)

I'd have posted a correction right away, but some of the replies you've gotten made me sick of the subject.

I am not your dupe account.

Gentoo. by dev trash (2.00 / 0) #18 Fri Jul 18, 2008 at 06:20:51 PM EST
I'm that kinda Lunix user.

I've sorted it all out, for now at least.  reverted my DNS changes to back what they were before i started this experiment.

Whatever floats your boat. by dark nowhere (2.00 / 0) #20 Fri Jul 18, 2008 at 07:12:30 PM EST
Gentoo is a really strange choice, I must say. There are worse, more popular ones though.

I am not your dupe account.
