I'm feeling very disconnected from my job.

My employer has, in an effort to be totally backward, essentially banned telecommuting just as we need it most.  You can telecommute, it just doesn't count as work hours, see.  You're off the clock if your ass is off your office chair.

I'm still being left out of the loop on a lot of issues, but only until it's too late.  Our shiny new internet connection was installed (physically) a couple of weeks ago.  The router was dropped in while I was on vacation.  I've spent two days trying to get the local IP of the router so I could test it and have the new routing table ready.  He kept telling me he didn't know and running me in circles.  Just a few minutes ago he wandered in, started up a conversation about some fucking website.  When I told him our connection is slow as hell today, he told me to just, "switch over to the new one".  Then he told me what IP address to switch my default gateway to, and I asked him why he didn't tell me that last week.  He didn't realize that was what I was looking for.

I know I think about work and nothing else when I'm in my office chair.

We're looking for more people by debacle (2.00 / 0) #2 Tue Jul 15, 2008 at 06:47:36 PM EST
Do you have your papers? We're a small shop, pretty laid back. Can you play foosball?

How far is your commute these days, anyway? by debacle (2.00 / 0) #3 Tue Jul 15, 2008 at 06:48:04 PM EST
We're at 701 Seneca.

And you'd be a shorter commute.

Interested? by debacle (2.00 / 0) #5 Tue Jul 15, 2008 at 07:02:07 PM EST
We're hiring just about everyone with experience in IT these days, from server monkeys and PC support to release specialists and everywhere in between. The pay isn't incredible (but reasonable), but there's a lot of room for vertical movement (and training on the company's $), a good amount of profit sharing, and the work environment is probably the best I've ever been in.

Telecommuting within reason. You need to be able to be in the office a few days a week.

Although I will say that there are reasons why I put up with the bullshit here, so I'm not saying I'm going to jump ship without a lot more info and thought (of course).

Server/Network by Phil the Canuck (2.00 / 0) #10 Wed Jul 16, 2008 at 10:14:44 AM EST
More specifically:

Windows Servers (NT4-2003)
Exchange
Novell products (Pre-NDS - 6.5)
GroupWise
Citrix/TS
WAN implementation and management (i.e. routing and such)*

Currently rolling out a new voip (I3) system which includes our new MPLS network.  This is all too new for me to claim to be an expert.  It is, however, functional (thanks to gaining the ability to route traffic over the MPLS so my boss could show me his new website crush) and I am managing it.

*I'll be fair and point out that our current routing equipment was, for the most part, purchased because it was the cheapest solution available and is likely not what you are using.

Hm. by debacle (2.00 / 0) #11 Wed Jul 16, 2008 at 10:50:39 AM EST
What about non-techincal experience: docs, project management, etc.

Well by Phil the Canuck (2.00 / 0) #12 Wed Jul 16, 2008 at 11:12:57 AM EST
Prior to this current mess of consultants, I always designed, scheduled and implemented any major projects around here. So yes, I am capable there.

Documentation? Do I have to enjoy it? If not I'm all set.

We're looking for people that understand by debacle (2.00 / 0) #13 Wed Jul 16, 2008 at 11:56:13 AM EST
CMM, Release engineering, process, etc.

We also need a server monkey type guy.

I'd most closely fit the server monkey role by Phil the Canuck (2.00 / 0) #16 Wed Jul 16, 2008 at 01:11:57 PM EST
Of course.

We only need a part-time server monkey by debacle (2.00 / 0) #17 Wed Jul 16, 2008 at 01:45:04 PM EST
The other half would be scheduling releases, etc.

What are you willing to work for ($)?

That I'd have to think about by Phil the Canuck (2.00 / 0) #18 Wed Jul 16, 2008 at 01:47:07 PM EST
Given that I'm sure I'd be losing certain benefits of this job (crazy amounts of time off and such), well, I'd have to think about it.

[ Parent ]

They're willing to negotiate by debacle (2.00 / 0) #19 Wed Jul 16, 2008 at 02:20:15 PM EST
So if crazy amounts of time off is a prerequisite, I'm sure they'd be for that. The only thing they really care about is:
  1. People who take responsibility for their own shit.
  2. People who can work on a team to get shit done.
