Good night. Guzzled down the beer a bit too quick at first, so faded out pretty early. Surprisingly, virtually no hangover this morning though.

What I'm Reading
Finished Saturday by Ian McEwan. Covers one 2001 day in the life of a neurosurgeon, where he avoids an anti-war protest and gets involved in a road rage incident.

Superb novel. First, it's brilliantly observed. UK literary novelists generally find life outside their charmed circle very hard to write about: either the characters are professors/novelists or else their ignorance of what actually goes on in an office or factory becomes painfully clear. The main character Perowne's life here is utterly realistic, though his upper-middle class idyll isn't exactly universal.

The book also lightly references the issues of the day, without ever becoming preachy or obvious. Overall it's just a brilliantly balanced book between the personal and the political, everyday life and extraordinary events. Highly recommended.

You've spotted my big bugbear with him though - it's just so bloody upper middle class, which I think makes his characters very hard to relate to at times. Haven't read Saturday, but in some of the previous obooks there's a lot of middle class masturbation about food, wine and interiors.

That aside, he's great. Have you read any of the early stuff, like Concrete Garden and Butterflies? They're very different.

It's an early short story. It's along the same lines as the Cement Garden and everything else he was writing at the time, just the best example of it. Very haunting and creepy.
