Got laid off by phone call at 8:00 last night. Dear wife was at work. Gave her the news this morning.

She's down at the Baptist Church parish house now, setting up for the big turkey & fixins giveaway that she organizes every year. Yesterday I moved a lot of frozen turkeys from the Baptist Church down to the Stone (Methodist) church where the community food pantry has some freezers. Later today I'll move them back to the Baptist Church parish house to be given away. It's supposed to be for poor people and most of our clients are poor. But some of them are just assholes not ashamed to say they're poor when in fact they don't meet our income guidelines. They come for free food & never offer to lend a hand.

In other news, tomorrow is my birthday.

Hey, buy my books, will ya? They make lovely stocking-stuffers and I sure am going to need the bread now that I don't have a job no more.

Many firms I have worked for have a no-layoff-in-Dec policy, so Nov tends to be the time when they swing the axe.

How bad is it ? Payoff ? Insurance ? Debts ? Mail you cans of beans ?

even if that were true, which I like to think it is, I'm still old and I still live on an island.

I'm trying to figure out how to make money working for myself. No great breakthroughs yet, but I've only been at it for half a day.

I have, for starters, however, turned my sig back to something mercenary.

Acts is spozed to be an "accessible" thriller of the Neal Stephenson (Cyrptonomicon) or Michael Chrichton variety. CCD, "Goedel Escher Bach as told by Hunter S. Thompson on acid", is a metafictional investigation of the notion of self awareness & its relation to dreaming-- disguised as a lampoon of Acts of the Apostles.

So to me CCD seems a logical sequel to Acts.

Others have told me, however, that they read CCD first, and considered Acts basically a footnote to CCD-- in the way perhaps that the original theme on which Bach based his Goldberg Variations is merely a footnote to his composition. When I heard that I was very proud indeed.

In other news, I'm sorry to be so ignorant, but what is it that you do? (or did) I know we're always looking for people, and for the right person they are okay with having them telecommute. It's nice if they can still come into town occasionally, but arrangements can be made if the candidate is excellent...

At this point in my career I'm back to doing what I did at the beginning, 30+ years ago, which is technical writing. I was until yesterday the documentation guy on OpenLaszlo, and since all the docs are online it's not hard to see my work.

I don't think I've ever actually met our other writer, which means he's working remotely and isn't necessarily even near the office at all. It's a good company - startupish, but I think they have a lot going for them, and a clever product that has a lot of companies interested in it. If you're interested, you should apply; alternately send me a private message and I can send something directly to our acting HR person for you.

After reading your 2 last diary entries I can only say so much.

So the below is for me mostly, but if you feel like reading it, be my guest, it is your diary entry after all (the rest of you as well, what the heck).

No matter how much life hurts it is still worth feeling it, the pain only enhances the good things about it, our eyes become witnesses on behalf of our tribes and their spirits.

At least you were watching climbing Everest with your bro, that is something.

The last movie I watched with mine was Vampire in Brooklyn/ Anything to numb the pain he said. 3 days later he was gone.

It is curious you mentioned your arousal by your sister in law in your previous diary. All what you said is how it happened to me as well. I suppose the genes, or some other force we don't understand yet (no, not God, he does not exist and is a Republican) is at play here. I never felt attracted to her, I don't now, but during those days I would feel aroused in a similar way, and my feelings were in general lines as you described yours.

Although I never felt ashamed (it was beyond my control) it helps me to find one more piece of the puzzle that were those horrendous two weeks I spent watching my brother wasting away. I thought something may have been wrong with me. I don't think there is, and if it is, at least I feel in very fine company.
