Week 1 ended today.

Last week I was at 167.8, and today i'm 168.6. I have no excuse, unless the fact that i'm retaining water counts as an excuse, in which case i'll take it.

i've done a couple things this week. i started eating more salads for lunch, instead of something less good for me. i also joined a gym, and started working out. i plan to go a couple times a week, because i have some gaps between when i leave work and when i need to be back in town that allow for a little while at the gym, and then i don't need to go home in between (so i'm saving on gas too). Also Nick doesn't get home for awhile after i do, so i don't feel like i'm losing time with him by working out instead of going home.

right now i'm sore (legs aren't used to running!), feeling swollen and bloaty,  and somewhat depressed at the fact that my weight is not going in the right direction. i'm also exhausted, so i think a nap is in order.

One week isn't enough time. by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #1 Fri Nov 16, 2007 at 07:06:45 PM EST
Hell, my weight varies as much as 3-4 pounds over the course of a couple of days. Keep at it -- it sounds like you're doing the right things -- and it'll work. You just have to be patient. :)

I've started cutting out my craving-a-smoke snacks, and I've cut back on the amount of beer I drink. I've walked some, but walking is still painful, so not enough. I do have an appointment with the PT on Monday, though, and I've found a convenient aikido dojo, so if I get cleared for that sort of exercise, I'm totally taking the beginner's class.

I could have just waited for toxicfur to post!

So, what she said. :)

You'll vary a couple of pounds a day normally.  Need at least a few weigh-ins to start even seeing a trend.  Also, when starting a moderate exercise program, it's very easy to put on more muscle weight than you lose in fat.  You're using a lot of muscles that you haven't used for a while and they start growing very fast when they're somewhat atrophied.

do you actually have a scale ... by R343L (4.00 / 1) #2 Fri Nov 16, 2007 at 07:12:41 PM EST
that can consistently measure that accurately? Are you weighing at the same time of day with approximately similar behavior (i.e. weighing before breakfast each time or something)? Those things definitely can make a difference within a few pounds.

In any case, don't be discouraged that it hasn't gone down in the first week. Unless you keep it up for several weeks and don't see any change, than maybe something isn't quite right or you've miscalculated what you need to do to get a calorie deficit. But right now? Just noise.

In a few weeks, you'll start seeing changes in the mirror -- which is far more important than what a scale tells you anyway. :)

And hugs.

nope by LilFlightTest (2.00 / 0) #7 Fri Nov 16, 2007 at 09:33:35 PM EST
i know my bathroom scale isn't all that great, but it does give me a rough idea. a lot of people might not think about the scale being the problem. it's not even a full pound, so i know i shouldn't be disappointed. plus i've only truly worked out once this week, plus a little with the trainer (i get her once for free), so i know i have more to do.

i am proud of myself, though, for spending 40 mins on a treadmill and even running a little.

You get naked in the medical department??? by Bob Abooey (2.00 / 0) #13 Sun Nov 18, 2007 at 10:16:14 AM EST
Either that or you're weighing yourself with your clothes on which is going to skew your results too.

Plus if you weigh yourself in the afternoon what you eat for breakfast/lunch/snack is going to skew things. Plus how much beverage you have in you etc etc.

I find the best way to really track weight is to weigh yourself once a week first thing in the morning, after going to the bathroom, either naked or with with some light jammies on, just so you never vary the outfit. It doesn't matter if your scale is 100% accurate as long as you use the same scale fro all the weigh-ins - it's the weight difference that matters, not the actual number.

And I guess I'll be the bad guy here but just eating some salad for lunch and going to the gym a couple times a week won't do much for you - other than stop you from putting on more weight I suppose. I'm assuming you're doing more than that but you just didn't write about it.

Warmest regards,

i weigh myself with clothes by LilFlightTest (2.00 / 0) #14 Sun Nov 18, 2007 at 03:13:40 PM EST
because all my clothes are a similar weight, and i make sure i wear the same shoes. also because they have a far more accurate scale than i do. i have to pretty much zero mine before i get on it, then weigh myself, and when i get off it's not quite zeroed anymore.

i don't know if you really ready my diary i did before i started this thing, but i explained why just exercising will bring the weight off for me. it's because the way i eat didn't change, what changed is my daily activity level. i went from a job where i stood and walked around all day to one where i sit all day, and THAT is when i started gaining. even reducing my calorie intake by a teeny tiny bit will have a giant effect if i start exercising more.

Don't pay too much attention by TheophileEscargot (2.00 / 0) #10 Sat Nov 17, 2007 at 03:00:56 AM EST
To short term weight changes.

First, due to water and food processing, your weight can easily fluctuate by a couple of pounds (sometimes more) over a few days.

Second, if you've started exercising you will be gaining muscle. Muscle is denser than fat and is distributed differently, so this can make you weigh more even as you're getting thinner.

The scale won't tell you anything meaningful for a month or so.

i don't care quite as much about the scale by LilFlightTest (2.00 / 0) #12 Sat Nov 17, 2007 at 02:35:57 PM EST
as about the way my pants fit. however, with two guys on my team, they don't quite get the fact that women have a harder time losing weight (we require 12% fat for fertility, for gord's sake) and we retain more water than they do. even though i understand that the scale isn't what matters, and that i will have a harder time losing weight, there's still a sort of pressure to keep up.
