I've wishlisted both the Silverman book and the book about Steinmeyer, which sounds even more interesting.

If you haven't read it already I strongly recommend "Carter Beats the Devil" by Glen David Gold, which is fictionalised account of the life of Charles Carter. You get the best of both worlds, his magic, and details of his life and old San Francisco, with all the colour and romance of a fiction novel set at the turn of the century.

I must admit that, at first, it looked a little cutesy. The version I had included a "secret message" in Braille on the cover and I was thinking it would be a gimmicky smirk of a book. But first impressions were completely wrong and I dug it. Does he have a new book out yet? Isn't about time? I read his short story in the Chabon-edited "Thrilling Tales" collection, but that's the only other thing I've seen from him.

It's the first I'd heard of him by nebbish (2.00 / 0) #17 Fri Nov 09, 2007 at 07:31:11 AM EST
And it took a friend a lot of persuading to get me to read it, I can be a bit conservative sometimes :)
